This is the cover of the Baudin novel that starts in my blog.
Be Well :)
I am very fond of the sonnet. I've worked myself in quite a habit of writing Petrarchan sonnets lately. The Shakespearian doesn't resonate so well, but I think I shall have to challenge myself to build a respectable body of those as well. I find the forms challenging in a healthy, competitive way. Also fond of villanelles and sestinae. I've been working a little with ottava rima lately. So much of a poem depends on where you begin. If you start with a sonnet, you usually limit yourself to a fairly narrow range of themes. I find that I tend to be more narrative and rhetorical with forms, and especially with the sestina. A villanelle, I believe, really should have smooth enough prosody to be sung or chanted.
Greatest compliment I've had is readers telling me they would never have known the verses were formal. That's a sweet place to be. The form is in control as long as you can see it without looking; the poet is in control when the form becomes/remains invisible to casual observers.
Be well.
