Plena is a narrative song from the coastal regions of Puerto Rico. Its origins have been various claimed as far back as 1875 and as late as 1920. The lyrics are call and response vocals that express themes about everyday life from the smallest incident in the community to universal occurrences. The instruments used for this type of music are hand drums called Panderos. The musicians are called Pleneros/Pleneras and there are three main styles of Plena: Ponce, Mayaguez, and Santurce.
I am a Teaching Artist in residence and I have been performing and teaching Plena Music (Caribbean Hand Drums) from Puerto Rico for general students and special needs in Middle Schools, High Schools, Colleges, Cultural Centers, Community Centers, Juvenille Correction Facilities, Hospitals, and Congregations throughout New York, New Jersey, Massachusets, Philadephia, Connecticut, Florida, Puerto Rico,...for several years and now in Illinois. My goal is to expose the world to Plena Music and share my knowledge & talent with people everywhere.
I'm Looking To Connect With...
...other musicians, artists, teachers, students, schools, centers, and organizations that are trying to preserve cultural diversity and contribute positive things to communities around the world.
Hey Samito! Sorry that I'm so quiet and don't upload my art often... You can keep an eye on my blog if you want www.janetbotes.blogspot. If you ever come to South Africa, it would be great to meet you!

Hi! Thanks for the comment!
You should definitely come do a workshop at my school! We're a very international campus with students from 32 countries, so we're always into learning about different cultural traditions!
The website is www.soka.edu. I would recommend contacting the Student Affairs staff, either Michelle Hobby or Julian Velarde about coming in the future. Hope to see you here!

Hola Samito,
gracias por convocarme como amigos.

Mark my words...I will be in one of your classes at some point in time - because I have put the request out to the universe! I am seeing some collaboration possibilities? < hand up > I have a friend in Seattle who lost his life's musical work when an eagle flew into his studio. That part is a tragedy...cuz he was very good! But, the premise he was working with included online collaboration from other artists. Who would then put it all together and what they created was nothing less than incredible.
Either way, thanks for stopping by and saying hello. There are so many people that have such a wonderful vibe on this site. You all really are part of a co-creation process dedicated to making the world a kinder - gentler place. Thank you for the beauty (visual / musical / written) that you each contribute.)

ps I hope that you each will take a moment out of your day to stretch your bodies. We won't call it yoga (for those who are yogaphobic :-D ) But take the time to love your body(ies) and give it what it needs today. It needs to be moved and worked and used. < nag mode turned off >
Hi, Samito! Thanks for the friend request and the lovely note. I appreciate your friendship. :O)
I know three people who play conga's here in WA State. I also have a friend (clarinetist) who absolutely loves Choro (pre-dates Samba and Bossa Nova) and has potluck Choro parties in her home where up to 20 or more musicians get together to jam. As I recall, there was a hand drummer at one of the parties over the summer. Are you familiar with Choro?
