About Me:
Matthew Wilson is the principal of Second Nature Environments. He brings over 30 years of experience to the field of landscape design and has distinguished himself as a true artist with his unique and stunningly beautiful environments that grace both commercial sites (e.g., museum exhibits and zoo enclosures—see the Jurassic theme in our project gallery) and what, in essence, is the private homeowner’s resort for the fortunate few who have discovered his talents.

Matt has the uncanny ability of viewing a setting and visualizing a transformative environment that takes into consideration the homeowner’s ideas and priorities, lifestyle and personality. Further, he then is able to encapsulate the many details needed to complete the job (from the additional outlets needed for entertaining to PCV sleeves for a tetherball—and the brass plate to fill in the hole once the kids have outgrown the game).

Much of Matt’s inspiration comes from his travels, which comprise over 19 countries and islands around the world, including Fiji(x2), Singapore, New Zealand, Canada(x4), Mexico(x12), Honduras, Costa Rica(x7), nearly every Caribbean island, Columbia, and central Europe (from England to Greece). And although he admits to enjoying the comforts of the luxury resorts, his real passion is seeking the “National Geographic” experience—discovering grottoes and canyons, unique flora & fauna and the off-the-beaten-track waterfalls that make discrete pathways to the sea.

Matt has been developing his style and trade since his teen years, acquiring his California Certified Nurseryman’s Certificate at age 17. After several years and jobs in the nursery business, Matt started his own construction company in 1981.

Matt found his real calling, however, in 1992, when he was introduced to the “amazing” qualities of artificial rock (which should not be compared to mere rocks, Matt insists, but are more appropriately compared to sculpture), “would you call the statue “David” a chunk of marble rock?” He was so captured by this product that he immediately set out to research how it was made, traveling to both Tucson and New Orleans. He then experimented on his own in the Sierra Foothills, painstakingly designing and creating molds that he would then fill with plaster and finish off with detailed sculpting and staining. Matt was the first to introduce an artificial rock business to Northern California and has remained the Northern California leader ever since.

It was then only a natural progression for Matt to take this versatile medium and begin to use it in designing environments—initially; commercial sites that then dominated the demand. And it was during this phase of Matt’s career that he became aware of his own gift for landscape design and was able to transfer that into private homes where his clients return every day and feel as though they’re on vacation without the hassle of transportation, time change or accommodation.

Matt holds California contractors’ licenses in general building, landscape and earthwork & paving (classifications B, C12, C27 #654759), and a Certified Nurseryman’s license (#790).

Residential design philosophy

"If you define your personality as creative, it only means you understand what is perceived to be creative by the world at large, so you're really just following a rote creative template. That's the opposite of creativity." Chuck Klosterman
