What do you think about stigma of artists with disabilities ? I am a member of V.S.A. arts and a D.E.S. daughter my sister has schizophrenia. I believe that the A.D.A is a law that is meant to correct stigma of the disabled and believe the art world would be better off to take it seriously. The problem of stigmatizing people with illnesses is the fact it is often a way to violate disabled artists rights. Universities and galleries that try to wiggle out of this law disgust me. Under A.D.A. if you have a medical problem or mental health issue you are suppose to be protected from discrimination. Stigmatizing the Mentally ill who are often extremely creative is wrong .They make powerful statements in Art. It seems to happen alot. Kate Millett is sensitive to this issue In her book The Looney Bin Trip. She also wrote Sexual Politics
and several other books. She is a manic depressive ,a sculptor and an artist,Millett is a great intellectual. Karin Fain

The telephone number for D,E.S.Action is !-800-DES-9288
D.E.S. is a drug given to women to provent miscarriage and sometimes for morning sickness. It was banned by the United States government in the early 70s.You can go to the National Cancer Instititute web site and look up D.E.S. or go to D.E.S. action on the web.It can also effect sons. A good book to read about D.E.S.exposure is To Do No Harm D.E.S. and the Dilema of Modern Medicine.

I looked up the Acronyms you refer to in your statement. I am really impressed with the VSA. Any gallery that would refuse an artist because of a disability is probably not a gallery worth utilizing. They are not looking at the art they are focusing on the bottom line, (money). Disabled people are a part of the world and the people that can't accept that are whack.
Maybe a posting of the galleries that discriminate would be helpful to artist.
I'm sorry to hear that you are a DES daughter. It seems that they were using the humans as test subjects back in the day.

V.S.A. is a great source for those of us with disabilities. It is not just the art world that has a problem. The problem is caused by the fact the A.D.A. has been watered down and has become a joke. It needs to be inforced. I think that posting or protesting institutions and galleries that stigmatize those with disabilities might have some impact. The Gorilla Girls site statistics when they talk about discrimination of women artists. The art world needs to be fair and follow the law.Regarding D.E.S. everyone knows D.E.S. exposure is a bad thing. I have had many expensive problems.D.E.S. can create a situation that like many other chronic illnesses can evolve into a hidden disability. It is hard for those of us with hidden disabilities. It is hard to get correct accommadations. It is particularly, hard in backwards states. Many institutions have gotten away with a lot of discrimination even when they know they are acting wrong. There are laws in place they try to ignore because they don't take the law seriously.
A good book about D.E.S. Is titled D.E.S. and the Dilema of Modern Medicine. Just like wall street needs regulation in the U.S.A. so do the drug companies. D.E.S. exposure may cause depression, post tramatic stress disorder and many other things besides cancer. They are doing third generation research on D.E.S. granddaughter mice. They don't know what it can cause.D.E.S. action is a good group to belong to. Thanks for your strong response to these problems.
